This was a very difficult year for me, personally, as it became apparent that I needed to cut back on the number of animals in my personal herd to make the quality of life better for the humans I am responsible for.  It came after much prayer and tears.  I was torn as to whether I might need to sacrifice the goats entirely as I am just one person and I only go so far!  However I am firmly grounded in the belief that we should have goats milk, Prov. 27:27 "And thou shalt have goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens."
I find it amazing that the bible specifically mentions woman in this "blessing".
I have always had a wish to be self sufficient.  It is indeed very difficult with my husband's job taking him from home the vast majority of the time and my children so very young at this time.  I have a peace at this time that while I have had to cut back and sell many of my hard earned breeding does I should keep our fresh supply of unsullied raw milk source!
I am a stay at home mother of three wonderful boys whom God has charged me with caring for at this important time in their lives.
  • NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING
I am whole hearted Pro-Life so prior to getting married I wanted to be sure that not only would I be leaving room for God to work if he chose but that I would not be using questionable chemicals on my body too.
NFP was the answer for us.  We took the course from a local Catholic Church (course can at times be found at a local hospital as well) Website: http://www.ccli.org/
We prevented pregnancy for two years and then conceived our son Daniel with no need to wait for an artificial form of birth control to clear my system.
Children are truly a blessing from the Lord.  With that in mind we have decided to space our children 2-3 yrs apart to give my body time to recover and to let me be able to care and enjoy them too.  We do hope to have at least one more however, with my husbands work taking him away so much and as I mentioned earlier I am only one person, I do not know that God will guide us to have the "larger" numbers of children that some families are blessed with.
Having seen the sorrow of miscarriage that friends and family have gone through I do not take the ability to have children for granted!

  • HOMEBIRTH
Yep, I am one of those, LOL!  I was not only born at home, was blessed with the opportunity to attend my little sister's birth when I was 14 yrs old but I have also given birth to all three of my boys in the comforts of my own home, surrounded by people who love me and are supporting me!
No I am not extraordinarily strong or brave but I do believe that God made my body to give birth and we have a wonderful skilled midwife to guide us as well.  It is a blessing to not have chemicals in my body or in my child's body!
It amazes me that in a society that encourages woman to be independent that so many woman do not educate themselves and make conscientious decisions and take responsibility for their own birth choices.  There is no doubt that cesareans have a worthy place in certain circumstances.
Birth is not something to be endured but rather something to be experienced!

  • NURSING
5 reasons I breastfeed my babies...

    5. Breastfed babies are prettier.  They develop muscles that coincide with cheek bone structure.
    4. The more I don't have to deal with a monthly cycle the better in my book!
    3. It is a bonding tool.
    2. It is the best form of immunity I can give to my infant.
    1. I am too lazy to bottle feed.  All that cleaning/sterilizing bottles, waking, warming and feeding.  Yep, 24hr on demand supply of milk.  Just plug 'em in!

Nursing is indeed a gift that too many mothers disregard.  In the American culture we rarely see a mother nursing a new born babe, let a lone giving comfort to her toddling child however in many countries, children nurse till they are 3, 4 or even 5 yrs old.  And I don't think they grow to be "pansies" in any way shape or form.
I tandem nursed Daniel (3 yrs at the time) when Matthew was born for about a year.  He weaned on his own.
I tandem nursed Matthew (2 yrs at the time) when Jonathan was born for a little over a year.  He had lost a lot of technique during my pregnancy which made nursing him uncomfortable.  I have "encouraged" him to forget nursing and take other forms of comfort.  He asks every now and then, mostly when he is sick but is easily distracted....
So right now I am nursing Jonathan, (currently 14 months) going strong and enjoying the blessings that go with it.
If you are interested in more information on Nursing here are a few books I recommend:

  • BABY WEARING
I am a sling maker, passed down from my mother.  She developed a pattern, combining several styles to create a sling type that we just love.  It is a padded rung, padded shoulder adjustable sling that is sized to the wearer.
    I charge $50 per sling.

  • HOMESCHOOLING.
I was homeschooled 2nd grade through graduation and having seen how important godly quality education is, I wanted to provide the same for my children.  So in the fall '07 I began homeschooling, Daniel.  We are really enjoying it and it amazes me how much they can absorb and the multitude of life skills they learn by being at your side throughout the day.  Daniel has learned about the care of babies, is currently learning to cook, clear dishes and put away clean ones not to mention clean a bathroom right along with phonics and math.  He is now observing his father working on remodeling various rooms in our small home.

Whoa, before you read more and start to (for some questionable reasons:-) idolize me....I am a sinner, I have lots of weaknesses here are a few superficial ones:
  • I love fast food...especially Dairy Queen's Flame Thrower burgers and Moo-Lattes!
Not to mention the toasted subs from Arby's.

  • We eat white pasta too....while I have found one brand of whole wheat pasta that we do enjoy, not only is it expensive but I kinda like the texture of white pasta:-)

  • I love cookies, cakes and donuts.  Deserts are a specialty of mine and a weakness!

  • I would rather not weed the garden.

  • I am very unorganized.

COLD REMEDIES
Here are a few of the cold season supplements we have use to treat/prevent sickness.

Most of them can be found at:
http://www.herbalremedies.com/

When all else fails I will use Modern Medicine.  Certainly not a first option for me though!

  • And here are a few that are not so superficial and can be a struggle for me.  They are points of prayer for me.
I am a work in progress.

  • I get mad and yell.

  • I can be quite disrespectful toward my children, husband, parents and inlaws.

  • I worry about the future (my family, my state, my country)

Living on one income,
in a two income world...

I will be adding to this site as much as possible.

We raise chickens for meat & eggs.  Here are a few of our laying hens '07.  Nice variety in this picture l-r: ameraucana, black sexlink, rhode island red, and california white.
Ameraucanas are a the "easter egg" chickens, laying eggs that range in color from green - blue.
Black Sexlinks are a hybrid breed.  Created with a Rhode Island rooster and a Barred Rock hen.
Rhode Island are very good layers especially for winter eggs.
California Whites are another hybrid.  This time using a California Grey rooster and a White Leghorn hen.
We also have a few Buff Orpington, Barred Rock, & Silver Spangled Hamburgs.
I hope to add a couple of Welsummer in the future.

Ok, yes, I know pork is not the most healthy meat, being a biblically "unclean" animal but I sure to love bacon, ham & sausage!
They also drink milk like it is going out of style.  A pair can drink 5-6 gallons a day and grow soooo fast!  We turn them around in 3 months with very little hog chop, mostly farm scraps and fresh, raw goats milk.
